The three components to this class are: Grammar, World Literature, and Essays. All of these components are essential for mastery of high school English. Firstly, we review how to identify phrases and clauses, gerunds, infinitives and participles, as well as capitalization and punctuation. Secondly, the scope of World Literature is explored. We start the year with The Odyssey a classical book written about 700 years before Christ. Our second book is Dante’s Divine Comedy written during the Middle Ages. The class will then continue with the play Macbeth by Shakespeare, The Scarlett Pimpernel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Born Again by Charles Colson, and the modern play 12 Angry Men, as well as a unit of poetry. Finally, writing academic formal essays is covered. Throughout the year the students will write five essays: Historical Figure, Comparison, Personal Narrative, Cause or Effect, and a Judicial Review. Preparation for the “writing” portion of the SAT is also covered by completing 6 – 8 timed writing assignments using actual SAT prompts. We will finish the year with a short unit on public speaking.
