Why study the Greek language?

The Bible is a gift from God, a treasure chest, which few Christians today know how to unlock.  Cor Deo seeks to graduate thoughtful, perceptive, analytical, and informed students with the ability to articulate and apply a Biblical world view.

Starting in 1st grade and continuing through Sr. High, Cor Deo students gain a firm understanding of Koine Greek.  The Old Testament was translated into Koine Greek between the third and first centuries before Christ.  The New Testament books were originally written in Koine Greek.  The advantages of learning God’s Word from the original translation include:

  • Gaining a deeper understand of God’s Word
  • Having a defense against false teaching
  • Having the ability to perform root word study
  • Gaining exposure to the Biblical writer’s thoughts and culture
  • Developing strong grammar and syntax, improving one’s understanding of English
  • Fostering deeper thinking and logic
  • Developing the ability to translate from Greek text into English

Curriculum

New Testament Greek in the elementary grades is taught using “Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek.”  Upper grades learn biblical Greek using Bill Mounce's Biblical Greek textbooks.

T. Robertson, a distinguished Greek scholar, said, “The Greek New Testament is the New Testament. All else is translation. Jesus speaks to us out of every page of the Greek.  To get these words of Jesus it is worthwhile to plough through any grammar and to keep on to the end.”
